My Morning Skincare Routine

I live a simple life when it comes to many things, and my skincare routine is one of those things. I use Avene Cleanance Cleansing Gel to wash my face and depending on my skin’s mood or if I remember, I use my Clarisonic Mia 2 to deep clean. Sometimes, I use my Clarisonic in the evenings. As a face cream, I’ve been looking to Coola’s Classic Face SPF 30 – Unscented. It moisturizes and provides sun protection, so duh. On special occasions when I feel my under eye area is unusually dry, I’ll dab on a bit of Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 Anti-Aging Eye Treatment with my ring finger. I typically only use eye cream in the evenings, though (eye cream deets to come in my nighttime routine post). The end. This is my morning skincare routine. Very basic.

Left: Coola Classic Face SPF 30 Sunscreen; Be The Skin Botanical Pore Toner. Top: Clarisonic Mia 2. Bottom: Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 Anti-Aging Eye Treatment. Right: Avene Cleanance Cleansing Gel.

I don’t use a toner. I used to use the toner in the blue bottle from Neutrogena as a preteen and throughout college. I stopped using it after my dermatologist told me a toner wasn’t necessary, especially since I lived in the suburbs at that time. I never questioned her. I believe I stopped using a toner for nearly a decade. Then, 2016 rolled around, K-Beauty (Korean Beauty) became a huge thing and FOMO happened to me – so I caved in and purchased Be The Skin Botanical Pore Toner and serum (serum deets to come in my nighttime routine post). It is supposedly great for controlling excess sebum production, and that’s why I was so pressed to buy it. Consistency is half the bottle, so I ended up using the entire bottle of toner in about three months, and I ordered two more because I thought I cared that much. Seven months later, I still haven’t finished the second bottle because I definitely do not care at all. It’s performance was truly lackluster. I didn’t see a difference in my skin when I used the toner compared to all the years when I did not use a toner. I still have an unopened third bottle that I will probably giveaway at some point.

Crazy enough, though – I would like to try Fresh’s Umbrian Clay Purifying Facial Toner because it’s said to specifically absorb excess oil. I guess I didn’t learn my lesson after Be The Skin lol. I’m intrigued by Fresh’s product because of the clay ingredient. I love clay in skincare, especially since it’s known to draw out dirt. It’s especially great for those with oily skin. More of clay to come in my nighttime routine.

Product reviews:

Avene Cleanance Cleansing Gel – I’ve been using this French brand since August, and I like it. It seems to be a great cleanser for my oily skin in the warmer months. It’s a bit drying, but not overly drying and it does a great job of getting rid of impurities. In the mornings, I don’t use much because I go hard in the evenings lol.

Clarisonic Mia 2 – I love my Clarisonic. When I first bought it in 2014, I used it religiously. These days, I use it about one to two times a week. I use the brush head for sensitive skin and set it at the “delicate” speed level. The other level is “universal,” but I’ve never used it. The Clarisonic is great at removing dirt and smoothing out my textured skin. A bonus is the pulsing timer feature that alerts the user on when to move to another area of her/his face. It’s waterproof, rechargeable and comes with a protective travel case.

Coola’s Classic Face SPF 30 – Unscented – This is my go-to sunscreen. It’s lightweight, non-greasy and made with certified organic ingredients. I’ve used it all summer, and I don’t have any complaints. It’s really just a simple, no-fuss moisturizer. Even though the tube is only 1.7 oz., there’s still product left inside. It’s been five months, and I’m not complaining since it costs north of $30.

Honorable Mentions

Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser – This brand was recommended to me by my dermatologist and might be the reason for why I didn’t need a toner. Cetaphil does not offer toners as part of its product line. It only carries cleansers and moisturizers. This face wash is also great at removing impurities and makeup. I find it to be a bit drying, though, especially in the wintertime. I complained about it to my dermatologist and she recommended CeraVe.

CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser – This product is marketed to people with dry to normal skin. It’s not soapy and looks like a cleansing moisturizer/gel hybrid. My skin doesn’t feel tight or stripped when I use this cleanser; it’s very gentle. At the same time, my face also doesn’t feel squeaky clean like it does when I use Cetaphil or Avene. This is why I like to use this in the mornings in the wintertime.

Coconut Oil – No introduction needed. It’s 2016 and we’re all hip to the benefits of coconut oil. Coco is everywhere, and you can’t escape it. Coconut oil is a natural moisturizer and has worked great for my face and skin in both the summer and winter months. It’s light, but a bit greasy – so I don’t put much on my face. It keeps me glowing all year round, too.

All of these products can be found in a drugstore except for the Clarisonic, Coola and Be The Skin. These are sold at various department stores, Sephora or online. The coconut oil I usually use is at Trader Joe’s, but most grocery stores have it, too. Just make sure it’s organic, virgin and unrefined.

Thanks for checking out my morning skincare post! Let me know if you have any questions.

      1. I’m not sure what type of skin you have, but that might be why. I used to use it everyday too but then started using it once or twice a week. Sometimes every two weeks. Ppl have said it’s too harsh, drying or caused breakouts, so you’re not alone.
